HARTFORD, CT – State Representative Ben McGorty (R-122) announced his co-sponsorship of SB 1426, a bill that significantly strengthens and expands Connecticut’s Firefighters Cancer Relief Program, reaffirming the state’s commitment to supporting its first responders.

“As a 36-year veteran of the fire service and Deputy Fire Marshal for the City of Shelton, I understand the risks our firefighters face every day,” said Rep. McGorty. “That’s why I proudly co-sponsored this legislation to ensure they have the support they deserve.”

SB 1426 extends coverage to include skin cancer and makes benefits available to state-employed firefighters and the families of firefighters who have submitted claims. These changes build upon the existing program by addressing gaps in eligibility and expanding access to critical financial assistance.

“Firefighters face elevated cancer risks due to toxic exposures on the job—risks that persist despite advances in protective equipment,” McGorty said. “This bill is a meaningful step toward giving back to the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for our communities.”

The bill passed with strong bipartisan support and now awaits further action in the State Senate.

“We owe it to our first responders to make sure they’re not alone when facing occupational illness,” McGorty added. “I’m proud to stand with them and take action that makes a real difference.”
