Public Hearing March 8th: Governor’s Proposal Expected to Raise Gas Prices

On Monday, the Environment Committee will hold a public hearing on the Governor’s climate change proposals, including the implementation of the Transportation and Climate Initiative. This is a highly controversial plan to place a cap on carbon emissions created by gasoline producers and suppliers.
Despite what the Governor has said, this will likely increase gas prices for Connecticut drivers. It would also increase gas prices for anyone who uses our roads, leading to higher prices for groceries and other goods transported in from out of state.
In addition, TCI is expected to involve multiple states across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic all putting the same driver-paid taxes and fees in place. But there is nothing holding other states accountable for following through, and if Connecticut goes ahead and hikes our gas prices to pay for this program, there’s not even a guarantee that states like Massachusetts or New Jersey will do the same. That would put our state economy at an even greater disadvantage compared to our neighbors.
If this bill would pass, it would affect every Connecticut driver when they fill up at the pump. I encourage you to testify and let the administration and the legislature know that we don’t need another gas tax.
