cap-sliderNewlyre-elected State Representative Ben McGorty (R-122) has received his legislative committee assignments for the 2015 Session. McGorty won a special election on July 22nd to fill out the remainder of the term of the late State Representative Larry Miller who passed away on May 31st. On November 4th, McGorty was elected to his own two-year term representing parts of Shelton, Stratford and Trumbull.  His appointments come from House Republican Leader Themis Klarides (R-114).

McGorty will serve on the legislature’s powerful budget-writing Appropriations Committee which has cognizance over appropriations and the budgets of state agencies. Other issues under the committee’s jurisdiction include matters relating to state employees’ salaries, benefits and retirement, teachers’ retirement and veterans’ pensions and collective bargaining agreements and arbitration awards for all state employees.

He has also been re-appointed to the Environment Committee which oversees all matters relating to the Department of Environmental Protection, including conservation, recreation, pollution control, fisheries and game, state parks and forests, water resources and flood and erosion control; and all matters relating to the Department of Agriculture, including farming, dairy products and domestic animals.

In addition Rep. McGorty will serve on the legislature’s Judiciary Committee which oversees matters relating to courts, judicial procedures, and criminal law, as well as all reviews all judicial nominees.

“I appreciate the confidence that our House Republican Leader Themis Klarides has placed in me by assigning me to these significant committees this session,” said McGorty.  “I look forward to the many challenges ahead as we work to improve our state’s economy and bring jobs back to our communities.”

“Rep. McGorty served a mere four months before being re-elected to his own new term, and he has quickly shown himself to have an excellent grasp on many complex issues,” said Klarides.  “I know he will serve with distinction on these important legislative committees this session.”

The 2015 legislative session begins on January 7th.
