New Legislator Appointed to Energy, Environment & Housing

HARTFORD –Newly-elected State Representative Ben McGorty (R-122) has received his legislative committee assignments for the remainder of the year. McGorty was sworn into office last week at the State Capitol following his victory in a special election on July 22nd to fill out the remainder of State Representative Larry Miller’s term.  Miller passed away on May 31st.

His appointments come from House Republican Leader Lawrence F. Cafero, Jr. (R-42).  Cafero appointed McGorty to the same committees that Representative Miller served on.  He will remain on those committees until January of 2015.

McGorty will serve on the legislature’s Energy and Technology Committee which has cognizance on all matters concerning the Department of Public Utility Control and energy planning and activities.

He has also been appointed to the Environment Committee which has cognizance of all matters relating to the Department of Environmental Protection, including conservation, recreation, pollution control, fisheries and game, state parks and forests, water resources and flood and erosion control; and all matters relating to the Department of Agriculture, including farming, dairy products and domestic animals.

In addition Rep. McGorty will serve on the legislature’s Housing Committee which has cognizance over all matters relating to housing and housing programs.

“I thank the Republican Leader’s confidence in my abilities to capably serve as a member of each of these important committees,” said McGorty.  “I am especially honored to be appointed to the same committees as the late Representative Miller, where I can work to continue to advance the issues that were most important to him including conservation and affordable housing. I look forward to addressing the critical issues that come before all of these committees.”

Rep. McGorty represents the 122nd District which includes parts of the towns of Shelton, Stratford and Trumbull.
