State Representatives Ben McGorty (R-122) and Jason Perillo (R-113) are reminding their constituents and other residents of Connecticut about Tax Free Week, which runs from August 17-23, eliminating the state 6.35 percent sales tax on most clothing and footwear.

McGorty and Perillo said the annual one-week event provides an opportunity for shoppers to save some money and help support local businesses.

“This week provides an excellent opportunity to save on clothing and footwear while supporting our local economy,” said McGorty.  “I wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on the savings that are available this week.”

“With the end of summer upon us, and school starting soon, this is a great opportunity to save on back-to-school shopping as well as purchases for fall clothing,” said Perillo.  “There are many local retailers who carry anything you might need and this is the time of year to save on these purchases.”

Clothing and footwear costing less than $300 is exempt from sales tax during Tax Free Week. Clothing or footwear under $300 that is either rented or put on layaway is also tax-free. Items with a final cost of more than $300 will have sales tax calculated on the full cost.

Tax Free Week was first enacted in 2000, and applies to most clothing and footwear purchases that are intended for everyday use. Goods not covered under the program include items that are solely intended for use in sporting activities, as well as specialty boots for fishing, hiking, skiing and other activities. Also subject to normal taxes are accessories such as jewelry, watches, handbags, headbands, and wallets.
