McGorty and Perillo Give Capitol Update to Shelton Seniors
A packed house at the Shelton Senior Center gave a great reception to State Representatives Ben McGorty (R-122) and Jason Perillo (R-113) as they presented a legislative update on senior’s issues in a forum sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The event has held on January 19th at the Wheeler Street facility in Shelton.
The legislators discussed the upcoming legislative session, and the current state of the budget – already out of balance once again since the Democrat majority passed a deficit mitigation package in a special session early last month.
“The direction of our economy effects everybody in the state, but it has a special impact on seniors,” said Rep. McGorty. “Connecticut has been consistently rated one of the worst states in the U.S. in which to retire. We need to take steps to correct that.”
“There continues to be significant challenges for seniors who want to retire in the same state that they worked their whole lives and raised a family,” said Rep. Perillo. “The current state of the budget and our economy have a significant impact on seniors in this state, especially those that are on fixed incomes.”
Both legislators noted that they supported a measure during the last legislative session that would remove the personal income tax the state charges on Social Security income. They pledged to support similar legislation during the upcoming session, which begins Wednesday, February 3rd.
The AARP forum is held annually, and Perillo and McGorty expressed their thanks to the organization for asking them to participate once again.
