McGorty and Perillo Visit Charter Arms: Small Business Highlights

Reps. Jason Perillo and Ben McGorty took time recently to visit with the folks at Charter Arms of Shelton, a local business with a tight-knit family atmosphere which is flourishing as an example of an innovative manufacturing business that supports its employees and supports its home community.

Rep. Jason Perillo and Rep. Ben McGorty listen to Terry Rush, Vice President of Charter Arms during their recent tour of the facility.
The legislators made this the latest entry in their “Small Business Highlights” where they reach out to successful local businesses and highlight the stories of their success amid the persistent challenges of the Connecticut economy.
Charter Arms, located on Brewster Avenue, employs 45 local people in the assembly and manufacture of their internationally-acclaimed quality firearms. The company, which had humble beginnings as a five-person operation on Canal Street, is constantly looking for ways to improve their operation and hone the skills of their workers who are trained in-house. They rely heavily on other regional companies for supplies and materials in their manufacturing operation.
The company produces eleven different calibers of firearms and produce roughly 1,200 of them weekly. They offer healthcare and 401Ks to their employees, and dispersed over $400,000 in bonuses to them last year.
“Charter Arms is a quintessential community company,” said Rep. Perillo. “This is really what the American economy is built on, these small businesses that give back to their communities. That’s why we’re here. Not only to see how they work and do what they do, but to also see what we can do for them.”
“This is a business locally manufacturing products that is staying in Shelton,” said Rep. McGorty. “It doesn’t get any better than that.”
