State Representatives Laura Hoydick (R-120) and Ben McGorty (R-122) attended the dedication ceremony this afternoon for Stratford’s new Victoria Soto Elementary School.

The new state-of-the-art school is named for Stratford resident and Sandy Hook Elementary School First Grade teacher Victoria Soto, who died trying to save the lives of her students during the massacre at that school December 14, 2012.
Hoydick and McGorty joined Stratford Mayor John Harkins, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty, and other state and local officials in paying tribute to the sacrifice and life of Victoria Soto, noting that the school now stands as a monument to her and the love she had for her students and the profession of teaching.
The $18 million school replaces Honeyspot House as part of the Stratford Academy complex and is slated to open in the fall of 2015. The 36,000 square foot building has 10 classrooms which can hold 290 kindergarten through second grade students. The school is also be a model for security with special glass and security doors.
Members of the Soto family were on hand for the ceremony outside the new school, and were presented state citations from Representatives Hoydick and McGorty to commemorate the event.
