HARTFORD – State Representative Irene Haines (R-34) lauded last week’s committee passage of HB 5194 ‘An Act Requiring the Reporting of Accidental Deaths at Institutions of Higher Education’ in the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee, of which she is the Ranking Member.
If passed the legislation would require institutions of higher education to report accidental deaths and serious injuries caused by accidents that occur on campus. Testimony before the Committee included the parents and friends of Corey Hausman, a Westport resident who tragically passed away after a skateboarding accident three weeks into his freshman year.
“Creating new transparency surrounding accidental deaths at colleges will greatly benefit both students and parents as they weigh their options for their education. It is critically important to assess the safety of a college or university before putting yourself, or your child, in their hands,” said Rep. Haines. “These reports will also be vital as we continue to work to increase safety at our college campuses and could potentially prevent further tragedy.”
The legislation was passed unanimously by the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee. The bill will be placed on the House Calendar and await further action. To learn more or to track this legislation visit www.cga.ct.gov.
