HARTFORD – State Representative Irene Haines (R-34) is proud to announce the passage of a new bipartisan law that expands important benefits for the families of Connecticut’s first responders who lose their lives in the line of duty.

Senate Bill 1239, which Representative Haines co-sponsored and strongly supported, renames the Fallen Officer Fund to the Fallen Officer and Firefighter Fund and extends both financial and health benefits to the surviving families of all first responders, including firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and law enforcement officers.

“This legislation reflects our deep appreciation for the bravery and sacrifice of our first responders,” said Representative Haines. “When tragedy strikes, we have a responsibility to care for the families left behind. This bill ensures they receive meaningful support not just in the days following a loss, but in the difficult years ahead.”

Under the new law, the families of fallen first responders will receive a $100,000 death benefit and up to five years of health insurance coverage.

Governor Ned Lamont signed the measure into law this week, marking a major milestone in the legislature’s ongoing effort to support public safety workers and their families.

“I am grateful to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who came together to make this possible,” added Representative Haines. “It is a small way to honor the enormous sacrifice made by our fallen heroes.”

Rep. Haines Demands Accountability After Rushed CT Budget Passage

HARTFORD, CT — Today, the Connecticut General Assembly approved a $55.8 billion biennial budget by a rushed process that State Representative Irene Haines firmly rejects. Despite an 11.2% increase in General Fund spending over two years, a $2.551 billion rise, the budget fails to meet critical statutory and moral obligations. Most notably, special education excess […]
