EAST HADDAM – State Representative Irene Haines (R-34) celebrated Trails Day with a hike at the Harris Property. Over 180 Trails Day events took place across the state on June 4th and 5th to mark the day. Trails Day was established in 1993 by the American Hiking Society, according to the Connecticut Forest and Park Association, Connecticut has the largest annual Trails Day celebration in the nation.

Rep. Haines commented, “East Haddam and the rest of our beautiful 34th District has such a wealth of trails through state parks, preserves and land trust properties. I encourage everyone to step outside and enjoy our natural landscape and discover a new trail or two this summer.”

The guided hike through the property included naturalist and mushroom enthusiast Terri Garrity and concluded with a picnic at the “Haines Ranch” on Shanaghans Road. The Harris Property covers 118 acres of open space and 17 acres for municipal use including a community garden and a combined 3 miles of trails. More information about the property and other East Haddam open spaces can be found at the East Haddam Land Trust website at www.EHLT.org.
