State Representative Irene Haines (R-34) celebrated Read Across America by reading to students at Center Elementary School in East Hampton and East Haddam Elementary School.

In East Haddam Rep. Haines joined Mrs. Hall’s Kindergarten Class to read, “My Pony” by Susan Jeffers. In East Hampton she read “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate in Mr. McCarthy and Mrs. Benigni’s classes.

The annual tradition, promoted by the National Education Association (NEA), began in 1998 as a way to promote early childhood literacy and commemorate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

“I enjoyed reading to students in East Hampton and East Haddam, Read Across America is a great opportunity to celebrate the importance of literacy,” said Rep. Haines. “My own daughter attended East Haddam Elementary and had Mrs. Hall as her teacher, it was a special honor reading to her class.”

According to its website, the NEA seeks to build a nation of readers through its signature program, NEA’s Read Across America. For more information about this great event please visit www.nea.org/readacross.
