State Representative Irene Haines (R-34) released the following statement following the authorization by the Bonding Commission of state bonds to finance repairs to Gillette Castle State Park and Special Tax Obligation Bonds (STO) for repairs to the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry.

HARTFORD – On Wednesday, June 26th, the Connecticut State Bonding Commission met to consider a variety of bonding proposals.  Included on the bonding agenda was a request from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) for repairs and improvements at Gillette Castle State Park.

“The Castle is a huge driver of tourism, day trippers and is an engine for economic development in East Haddam and across the region. These funds for Gillette Castle will be used for much need repairs, including collapsed retaining walls, restoring deteriorating parts of the structure and improving compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act compliance.

Gillette Castle is among the most visited sites in our state hosting hundreds of thousands of visitors every summer. These improvements and repairs will enable more people to access this unique park and ensure that it will be in good condition for future generations.”

Additionally, a request from the Department of Transportation (DOT) included funds to repair damaged timber piles and hardware at the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry.

“South of the Hartford area there are just a few river crossings that residents rely on to get across the state. With scheduled repairs to the swing bridge more drivers will consider using the ferry as an alternative to driving up to Middletown to take the Arrigoni Bridge or to Old Saybrook to take I-95.

The ferry serves and important role connecting attractions across the river valley. Art Galleries, music venues, restaurants, breweries, wineries and retail establishments are all interwoven into along with some of the most beautiful land preserves, state parks, hiking trails and waterways to explore. The area has something for everyone.”
