Rep. Haines Applauds Bond Items for East Haddam

HARTFORD – State Representative Irene Haines (R-34) applauded the funding of two East Haddam projects at the March 31st meeting of the state’s Bond Commission.
One item included a grant-in-aid for an athletic complex at Nathan Hale-Ray High School. The bond of $1.4 million is expected to cover roughly half of the project’s expected cost.
“This has been a long-time need for our community, East Haddam is one of a small number of towns without an athletic complex. These funds will help bring the project to completion and provide student athletes with adequate facilities.,” said Rep. Haines. “I’d like to thank the Nathan Hale-Ray students who advocated for this funding and my colleagues on the Bond Commission for getting this on the agenda.”
Another item included in the bond commission agenda was a grant-in-aid for Connecticut Landmarks to make improvements to the Palmer-Warner House in East Haddam. The house, first built in 1738, was home to preservation architect Frederic Palmer and his partner Howard Metzger. Palmer was involved in the predecessor organization of Connecticut Landmarks and took part in restoration projects for the Goodspeed Opera House and the First Congregational Church.
The $1.5 million bond includes funds for exterior restoration, HVAC, parking, and ADA accessibility. More information about the property can be found on the Connecticut Landmarks website: ctlandmarks.org/properties/palmer-warner-house.
Since bi-partisan budget reforms in 2017, state bonding is capped at roughly $2 billion dollars, well below previous bond allocations.
