EAST HADDAM – State Representative Irene Haines (R-34) celebrated Read Across America Day on Friday, March 1st. The representative read “Dragons Love Tacos” by Adam Rubin to Ms. Nelan’s, Ms. Caron’s and Ms. Lowery’s second grade classes at East Haddam Elementary School. In addition to Read Across America, the students were dressed in green to celebrate school spirit week.

“It was a pleasure reading to the second grade classes and brought back some fond memories. Ms. Nelan and Ms. Caron taught my two daughters when they attended East Haddam Elementary,” said Rep. Haines. “The students were very inquisitive and asked a lot of questions about my role as State Representative, even asking about the capitol building dome in Hartford; is it real gold?”

According to their website, The National Education Association seeks to build a nation of readers through its signature program, NEA’s Read Across America. Now in its 22nd year, this annual day focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources.
