    Dear Friends & Neighbors,

May 12th – May 18th is National Prevention Week, an annual observance dedicated to increasing awareness and addressing issues of mental health and substance abuse. The East Hampton Prevention Partnership recently shared this announcement:

The East Hampton Prevention Partnership works in East Hampton to raise awareness about the importance of substance use, prevention and positive mental health. This year’s National Prevention Week theme is Inspiring Action…Changing Lives!

National Prevention Week is held in May near the start of the summer, which is an important time for schools and families to focus on the importance of communication and prevention.  Adolescents and college students most often use substances for the first time during June or July, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

The EHPP joins with our local educators to remind parents and students of these risks and opportunities.  The EHPP advocates stronger family bonds to develop and strengthen our community.

    •             Monday, May 13 Preventing prescription and Opioid Drug misuse
    •             Tuesday, May 14 Preventing underage drinking and alcohol use
    •             Wednesday, May 15 Preventing illicit drug use and youth marijuana use
    •             Thursday, May 16 Preventing youth tobacco use
    •             Friday, May 17 Preventing suicide

Take the time to discuss these important issues with your teens. We encourage parents to reach out to the EHPP by attending our meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 3PM at the East Hampton High School Library. For more information contact James Olsen, EHPP coordinator at jolsen@easthamptonct.gov.

The East Hampton Prevention Partnership can be found online and on Facebook.

Please share this information with anyone you know who may benefit.

    Best Regards,

Rep. Irene Haines – 34th District
