Arbor Day Celebration at Tarrywile Park

Posted on April 22, 2024

I’ll be joining the Tarrywile Park Authority on Sunday, April 28 from 10am to 2pm to celebrate National Arbor Day! Sign up to volunteer (qrs.ly/xkfpknh) to cut down invasive vines, plant flowers, or paint flowerbed boxes as we work to safeguard the beauty and biodiversity of Danbury’s Tarrywile Park, the largest municipally-owned in the state of Connecticut at 722 acres. We’ll be meeting by the red barn!

In the lead up to #EarthDay, I made weekly Facebook posts about some easy things we can do to contribute to a healthier planet. I started the month off by sharing details about a helpful event that the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) runs periodically throughout the year. Danbury hosted the latest regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day for the Greater Danbury Area. The following week I shared information about composting. Many of our neighboring towns are getting food scraps diversion programs up and running. While there is no official program in Danbury, we can do our part through Home Composting. This reduces the amount of material in garbage bins each week and is good for the soil in backyards. It will help retain moisture which may provide greater drought resistance.

Next, I highlighted something shared with me during a recent tour of Oak Ridge Waste & Recycling. Broken shards of glass can attach themselves to the other recyclables in the single stream system and contaminate them. The solution is simple! Separating glass from other recyclables improved the value for each recycled commodity. You can recycle glass at a collection container at the Mom & Pop Drop Off and Recycling Center at Oak Ridge’s facility on White Street. (Permit is required; free to Danbury residents)
