HARTFORD – State Representative Devin Carney (R-23) paid visits to Mile Creek Elementary School in Old Lyme, Kathleen E. Goodwin Elementary in Old Saybrook, and Lyme Consolidated School on Monday reading to children as part of Read Across America Day.

Established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998, Read Across America Day takes place annually on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. It has become the largest reading event in the country.

“I can’t overstate how enjoyable these types of events are for me,” Rep. Carney said. “Engaging with students is of the best parts of my job as a state representative. Mastering a proficiency in reading and emphasizing its importance at an early age will set our kids up for success in the future. I am thrilled the schools in the 23rd District always participate in this event.”

According to their website, The National Education Association seeks to build a nation of readers through its signature program, NEA’s Read Across America. Now in its 23rd year, this year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources.
