Reps. Carney and MacLachlan Participate in 20th Read Across America Day

WESTBROOK- In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the 20th Read Across America Day, State Representatives Devin Carney and Jesse MacLachlan paid a visit to students at Daisy Ingraham Elementary School on Friday morning. The annual event is celebrated on Dr. Seuss’s birthday to teach children the importance and joy of reading.

“I was delighted to be a guest reader on Read Across America Day,” Rep. Carney said. “The teachers and administrators truly go above and beyond to make reading fun and enjoyable for our students. Without their dedication, the quality of our education system would not be at the level it is today. I am grateful for all that they do.”
“I look forward to Read Across America Day every year,” said Rep. MacLachlan. Developing strong reading fundamentals will not happen overnight, it will take hard-work and practice. It’s critical that our young students learn this at an early age.”
Reps. Carney and MacLachlan read to Kindergarten students in Mrs. Konrad and Mrs. Blackwell’s class, as well as 4th graders in Mrs. Parkhurst and Mrs. Salerno’s class. The legislators read books by a number of authors including Dr. Seuss, and challenged the students to read every day not just at school but also at home.
Read Across America Day was established by the National Education Association in 1997 and has become the largest reading event in the country.
