HARTFORD – A bill cosponsored by State Representatives Devin Carney (R-23) and Chris Aniskovich (R-35) to provide additional resources and support services for individuals with an intellectual or developmental disability, has passed unanimously in the House of Representatives.

The main points of H.B. 5001 – An Act Concerning Resources and Support Services for Persons with an Intellectual or Developmental Disability, are to improve workforce development, increase housing resources, and minimize the waiting list for support services.

Additionally, the bill would require the Office of Policy and Management secretary, in consultation with the commissioners from the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DAS), Department of Developmental Services (DDS), State Department of Education, Department of Public Health, and Council on Developmental Disabilities to develop and recommend new statutory definitions for IDD and identify programs that may need to be changed or re-designated.

“Improving services for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities has been a top priority of mine,” Rep. Carney said. I am very pleased to see the unanimous passage of this landmark legislation which will improve lives and dedicate resources to the IDD community and their families. I look forward to the Senate passing it and the governor signing it.”

“I’m proud to support this great piece of legislation that will not only help those with intellectual and developmental disabilities to grow and develop as individuals, but also continue to be productive members of our communities” Rep. Aniskovich said.

With its unanimous support in the House of Representatives, the bill will now head to the Senate for further legislative action. If passed by the Senate, the bill would then move on to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
