This morning, I joined a bipartisan group of legislators to raise awareness to the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation and how we can move our proposed legislation (HB-6596) forward this session to eliminate it from occurring in Connecticut. Connecticut is only one of 9 states that does not explicitly criminalize it in state statute.
According to UNICEF, roughly 230 million women and girls have been subjected to female genital mutilation worldwide. Connecticut can take a stand against this by becoming the 42nd state to recognize that this practice has no place in our society and to stop future occurrences from happening.
