In one day, just a little over a week ago, the City of Holyoke, Massachusetts discharged more than 7,000,000 gallons of untreated sewage and stormwater into the Connecticut River. As someone who cares about our environment and is a state representative of a shoreline community, this is deeply disturbing. Beyond the obvious this shouldn’t be happening, it creates a massive public health risk and damages not only the water quality but produces a whole set of environmental issues that must be dealt with immediately.
This week, I joined my colleague State Representative Tami Zawisktowski in submitting a letter to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator for New England Mark Sanborn for assistance in preventing states like Massachusetts and other up-river states from discharging any harmful substances into the Connecticut River.
