Local Legislators Applaud Environmental Preservation Funding for Westbrook

Area legislators today applauded the state’s approval of $390,000 to preserve 84 acres of land in the Toby Hill Woods section of Westbrook as open space.

This funding will go toward the acquisition of an approved 38-lot subdivision and an additional four acres all located on the west side of Toby Hill Road.

“We are thrilled that Toby Hill Woods is getting this protection,” Sen. Art Linares said.  “Preserving our natural resources throughout Connecticut is our common goal, and these funds will ensure that this beautiful forest will be around for future generations to enjoy.”

“When people think of shoreline Connecticut, they don’t always think of hiking and open space, but we do, in fact, have some of the most beautiful parks and forests in New England,” Rep. Devin Carney said.  “This funding will go a long way in helping Westbrook to maintain the natural beauty and resources in our community like Toby Hill Woods. I encourage residents to get outdoors and enjoy this beautiful fall season.”

“With this aid, Westbrook will be receiving the funds necessary to preserve and beautify Toby Hill Woods, including the exciting addition of a regional trail,” Rep. Jesse MacLachlan said. “Residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to safely enjoy the beautiful sights and wildlife in our local forest. I would also like to thank the Westbrook town officials for joining us in our continued focus on improving the quality of life for our residents.”

Acquisition will avoid adverse impacts to natural resources, close significant gaps needed to connect to other town-owned open space properties (McVeagh Greenway), and enhance the creation of a regional trail system.

McVeagh Brook (headwaters to Patchogue River) traverses this property and along with eight vernal pools in a predominantly mixed hardwood forest, provides a rich plant and wildlife habitat in an unfragmented forest.
