Carney welcomes Mile Creek Second Graders to the CT Science Center

State Rep. Devin Carney (R-23) welcomed students from Mile Creek School in Old Lyme during their visit to the Connecticut Science Center (CSC) in Hartford, in the state’s continued effort to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
“These visits to the Connecticut Science Center will help our children and young people develop STEM skills that are necessary to compete in the dynamic and fast changing employment marketplace,” said Rep. Carney.
Last year, the Connecticut General Assembly supported new state investment in STEM education and training. The goal is to have a skilled workforce for Connecticut’s high-tech employers to meet the demands of the 21st century global economy. The investment in the STEM program for the University of Connecticut will generate $146 million per year in new research expenditures and $285 million in new business activity in Connecticut. In addition, it is expected to create 4,050 permanent new jobs and 30,000 total construction jobs through 2024.
Rep. Carney said, “The Science Center is a great resource for our students and serves as an outlet for hands-on learning. My hope is that tours of these exhibits will enable our students to exercise creativity and imagination, but more importantly, an interest in STEM education. I was thoroughly impressed by the enthusiasm on the students’ faces and their eagerness to learn. Lyme & Old Lyme continue to be ahead of the curve, so it comes as no surprise to see these kids have such an interest in science. I am extremely proud to represent such a wonderful community.”
