Carney Participates in Read Across America at Local Schools

On Friday, March 2nd, State Representative Devin Carney (R-23) paid a visit to Daisy Ingraham Elementary School in Westbrook, Lyme Consolidated School in Lyme and Kathleen E. Goodwin Elementary School in Old Saybrook to participate in Read Across America Day.

As national celebrations took place to honor Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Rep. Carney joined students, teachers, and administrators in their school festivities by taking part in the school-wide initiative to promote a love of reading amongst our youth where he read ‘Fox in Socks’ by Dr. Seuss to Westrbook students, ‘Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed’ by Emily Pearson to Lyme students and ‘Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato’ by Tomie DePaola to Old Saybrook students.

“I am always excited to participate in the celebration of Read Across America Day,” said Rep. Carney. “It is so important that we support initiatives that encourage and inspire our youth to become avid readers. I’d like to thank the students, administrators, teachers, and staff for the great work they do.”
According to their website, The National Education Association seeks to build a nation of readers through its signature program, NEA’s Read Across America. Now in its 21st year, this year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources.
