Rep. Carney Celebrates 19th Read Across America Day

HARTFORD –– State Representative Devin Carney (R-23) paid a visit to Mile Creek Elementary in Old Lyme, Rep. Carney’s alma mater Kathleen E. Goodwin Elementary in Old Saybrook and Daisy Ingraham Elementary in Westbrook to celebrate National Education Association’s 19th Read Across America Day on Wednesday, March 2. In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Rep. Carney joined in the nationwide celebration by reading classic children’s stories to several classes of elementary school students in the 23rd District.
Before his visit concluded, Rep. Carney had an interactive discussion with the children about his role as their State Representative and discussed the importance of reading and being kind to one another.
“This day is truly one of the best parts of my job as a State Representative,” Rep. Carney said. “Not only is it important to instill a love of reading in our youth, but our community must work together to develop students with good reading habits, especially since studies show this is a factor that leads to academic success.”
Rep. Carney added, “I’d like to thank the teachers and administrators that work diligently to make reading exciting for these students. I was very impressed by the each and every one of them at all three schools and was amazed at how willing they were to celebrate a day devoted to reading and learning.”
“The students were thrilled to have Rep. Carney visit his alma mater. He was able to share how the skills he learned at Goodwin School have helped him in his role as a representative. He brought their learning to life!” said Heston Sutman, Principal of Kathleen E. Goodwin School.
“We are delighted to welcome Rep. Carney as a guest reader on Read Across America Day. We are so appreciative of all the adults have done in and around our building to make reading engaging and fun for our students, including dressing up in “Groovy” costumes to end a week of fun-filled reading events,” said Ruth W. Rose, Principal of Eaisy Ingraham Elementary School.
“We were pleased and grateful to have Representative Carney as a special guest star on our morning broadcast. His willingness to personally convey his belief in the importance of reading was a powerful way to celebrate Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’ birthday,” said Patricia Downes, Principal of Mile Creek Elementary School.
Launched by the National Education Association in 1998, Read Across America Day involves more than 3.2 million teachers, librarians, athletes, celebrities, politicians, business professionals and everyday people reading to an estimated 45 million children in 2015.
