This is an update from the Capitol and the 62nd Legislative District: bidding farewell to a retiring superintendent of schools, celebrating a trail grant, commemorating Memorial Day, and closing out the legislative session.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kick off to summer. More importantly, on Monday we honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Here are commemorations taking place in the 62nd District:

Anderson Applauds New Hartford Trails Grant Allocation

New Hartford – The governor’s office recently announced release of about $9 million in grants to plan, design and build 50 recreational trails throughout the state. According to State Representative Mark Anderson, the Town of New Hartford will receive an allocation of $616,000 for the first phase of a multi-use trail project.

This grant, which was released in the May round of Connecticut Recreational Trails Program, was the largest of the 50 approved. The program is administered by the Connecticut

Students Visit Capitol, Upcoming Session Topics

I am writing to update you about my participation in National Day of Prayer, welcoming students from The Master’s School, and upcoming topics likely to be acted upon in the remaining days of session. I also stood in support of a concept to provide a break at the pumps. Locally, New Hartford Land Trust has been awarded a state grant.

Granby Resident Appointed, Better Budget Proposal Released

House Republicans recently proposed our two-year state budget plan. The balanced budget proposal is comprised of broad-based tax cuts, totaling over $1 billion, while still funding core government services.

New Hartford Resident Nominated to CTECS Board 

Congratulations to Dr. Christine Benz of New Hartford who was nominated by Governor Lamont to serve on the Connecticut Education and Career Systems (CTECS) Board which oversees technical schools. Capitol Update: Granby Grunts, Pine Meadow Fire District, Environment Committee Action

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of watching the Granby Grunts robotics team, based at Granby Memorial High School, compete in a district First Robotics Competition at Western New England University. Students and adult mentors put in extensive hours to build and tweak their design and it paid off with knowledge gained and a finish in the semi-finals.

Public Hearing on Legislation Seeking to Protect Victims of Domestic Violence

The Judiciary Committee will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. in Room 2C of the LOB and via Zoom.  The committee will hear testimony on the following bill:

  • H.B. 6887 – AN ACT CONCERNING ADDITIONAL LEGAL PROTECTIONS FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The public hearing can be viewed via YouTube Live.  In addition, the public hearing may be recorded and broadcast live on CT-N.com.   Individuals who wish to testify must register using the On-line Testimony Registration Form.

Anderson Reads to Bakerville School Students

NEW HARTFORD – Read Across America is an annual event, inspired by the birth of acclaimed author Dr. Seuss, to motivate children to read. Rep. Anderson stated, “I was happy to participate by reading to students at Bakerville School in New Hartford on Friday afternoon. The students were incredibly engaging and asked me some great questions after I finished reading to them. I look forward to visiting with them again soon!”

Anderson, Republicans Petition for Hearing on Highway Use Tax Repeal

HARTFORD – State Rep. Mark Anderson (R-Granby) joined his Republican colleagues Wednesday to submit a petition, effectively forcing the Finance Committee to consider a proposal that would repeal the Highway Use Tax (HUT).
