HARTFORD – State Rep. Christie Carpino supported a Republican-introduced proposal that will completely revamp Connecticut’s Clean Elections Program.

This legislation will eliminate grants to unopposed candidates, reduce Citizens’ Election Program grants by 25%, and expand the prohibition to prevent family members of candidates participating in CEP from being paid more than $1,000 by any candidate receiving CEP funds.

“These reforms will save our taxpayers money and bring good government to Connecticut by strengthening election campaign laws,” said Rep. Carpino. “Connecticut residents deserve clean elections,” she said.

Rep. Carpino introduced similar concepts earlier this session: House Bill 5039, An Act Prohibiting The Increase of Grants Under The Citizens’ Election Program to Prohibit CEP grant amounts, and House Bill 5050, An Act Reducing The Amount Of Grants Under CEP.

The bill now moves to the Senate for a vote.
