House Republican Leader Themis Klarides (R, 114) announced today that East Haven’s 99th District Representative Joe Zullo has been promoted to serve as the House Republican “ranking member” on the General Assembly’s Housing Committee.

Rep. Klarides announced, “In his first year, Rep. Zullo has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to his district and, at the same time, has contributed meaningfully to the assembly’s debate processes. Most recently, he announced his intent to introduce common sense initiatives to make the state’s affordable housing regulations work more efficiently and fairly for towns across the State. We are excited to elevate him to a leadership role on the assembly’s housing committee.”

Zullo, who was elected to the legislature in a special election last February, is still in his freshman term and expressed gratitude and excitement about taking on an expanded role in the upcoming short session.

Zullo explained, “I’m honored that Reps. Klarides and Candelora trust me to take on a leadership role in my freshman term. I have a particular interest in housing issues and I am ready to take a leading role in helping to address some of the State’s ongoing housing-related issues.”

Zullo, who made headlines last week after announcing a desire to retool the state’s affordable housing regulations to prevent manipulation by developers, indicated he hopes to be able to advance his proposals in his new role.

Zullo added, “As ranking member, it’s my job to advocate for proposals advanced by my colleagues. I’m looking forward to that and to sharing my ideas about bringing practical, meaningful changes to the State’s affordable housing regulations.”

Zullo, who practices law with his father and partner, concentrates in real estate law and has significant experience in housing matters including landlord-tenant law and foreclosure.

Zullo added, “We have a very diverse law practice and I am looking forward to bringing that experience to this new role on the housing committee.”

Zullo concluded, “It’s been a true privilege to advocate for East Haven this past year as the 99th district representative. It’s a truly humbling endeavor and it’s one I appreciate every day. I’m excited to get to work this session in this new leadership role and eager to explore how I can continue working to improve the quality of life for my constituents and for everyone across the State.”
