Zullo Offers Collaboration to Leverage State Funds to Create Town’s First Community Garden

EAST HAVEN — State Rep. Joe Zullo has invited Mayor Joe Carfora to work together to explore construction of the town’s first community garden, offering to lend the resources of his office to help leverage state funds to do it.

Zullo, who serves 99th House District, has suggested the town could use Local Capital Improvement Program (LoCIP) funds provided by the state. In the past, East Haven used LoCIP money to renovate fields and build a skate park, and Zullo contends that this funding source could be targeted to develop a community garden at no cost to local property taxpayers.

“Recreational outlets can foster a sense of pride, and a garden like this would encourage sustainability and a bit of passive community engagement at a time when the immediate future of concerts, fireworks, and festivals is uncertain,” Zullo said.

In a letter to Mayor Carfora, Zullo suggested the town could involve the local garden club, the food pantry, or other civic organizations.

“I think planning, building and eventually opening a garden could rally a lot people during this difficult period, and I’m happy to lend my time to get a project like this off the ground,” Zullo said.
