On Wednesday, State Rep. Joe Zullo announced that he, along with Deputy Minority Leader Vin Candelora and other local representatives, will be coordinating a “Farmers to Family Food Box” event this Friday, August 7th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m at the Connecticut Sportsplex in North Branford.
“Food insecurity and hunger are real problems in East Haven, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m appreciative of the efforts of individuals in Connecticut who are quarterbacking this great USDA program and for the opportunity to bring its benefits to East Haven’s residents,” said Zullo.
The drive-up event at Connecticut Sportsplex, 216 Foxon Road in North Branford, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until the supplies run out. Participants will drive into the Connecticut Sportsplex parking lot, forming a line so volunteers can place the boxes of produce in their vehicles.
Zullo added, “In addition to encouraging residents to make the short drive across town to Route 80, I am going to be reaching out to our incredible volunteers at our Food Pantry and to Mayor Carfora to see how we can maximize the food boxes allocated and available to East Haven residents during the event and in the days after.”
As part of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is partnering with national, regional and local distributors to distribute as much as $3.1 billion in food boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meat products and teaming with local partners to coordinate distribution to needy families, food banks, and through other distribution outlets.
Zullo concluded “I want to thank my staff for working with Rep. Candelora and the program’s coordinators to get this event organized so quickly. I continue to hear from residents struggling to make ends meet due to the pandemic and I want to encourage anyone in need to make the drive over on Friday to take advantage of this wonderful USDA initiative.”
