EAST HAVEN – State Representative Joe Zullo held a Legislative Process Forum on Wednesday night that attracted a large crowd looking to learn more about the legislative process and to share their bill proposal ideas.

Rep. Zullo, who won a Special Election in February 2019, said he has learned more about the legislative process in the year that he has served in Hartford and wanted to share what he has learned with the residents of East Haven.

Zullo explained, “It’s so important for people to understand how their government works so that they can effectively communicate with their representatives and have a meaningful say in their government. My goal, through this forum, was to empower my constituents be able to better participate in Connecticut’s legislative process.”

During the hour forum at the Hagaman Memorial Library, Rep. Zullo presented a slideshow to residents, which took them through the process of how a bill becomes a law. After the presentation was over, Rep. Zullo took questions and listened to residents’ ideas about legislation he should put forward this session.

One of the ideas that came out of the forum was a proposal to make it easier for the public to testify on legislation. Rep. Zullo agreed that the current process is antiquated and needs to be updated.

“The State Capitol and the Legislative Office Building are the people’s buildings and should not be controlled by special interest groups and lobbyists,” said Rep. Zullo. “We need to make it easy for people to express what they think about legislation. I will be having a conversation with my caucus leadership and fellow lawmakers to see what we can do to fix the current way public hearings are handled at the State Capitol.”

Rep. Zullo also said he will be reaching across the aisle to see if he can build bipartisan support to improve and make modifications to the State’s affordable house framework.

Rep. Zullo plans on hosting additional opportunities for residents to speak with him this session, but expressed that his door is always open and to contact him.

Rep. Zullo and his staff can be reached at Joe.Zullo@cga.ct.gov or via telephone at 860-240-8700.
