The violence and the siege that unfolded in our nation’s capitol today, like the violence and looting stemming from protests over the past six months, is unacceptable. Violence, in stark contrast to peaceful protest, contributes nothing to our discourse and frustrates healthy dialogue. As I wrote in an op-ed many months ago, it is up to us all to approach each day with minds and hearts open enough to ensure the continued success of our democracy. We need to be brave enough to depolarize our discourse, leaders need to facilitate healthy dialogue, and we need to find room for a diversity of viewpoints in our daily discourse and politics.
