Rep. Tami Zawistowski was recently invited to meet with Suffield’s 5th Grade classes at McAlister Intermediate School, where she presented to them about her experiences serving in the state legislature and the basic procedures of how a bill becomes a law. Following her presentation, Zawistowski answered wide-ranging questions from the students in attendance. The discussion with the students was prompted by Suffield’s participation in Connecticut’s Kid Governor program, in which 5th graders are introduced to politics at a young age, leading to future engagement in government. Candidates present a platform to their classmates and must gain enough support to move forward in the process. Zawistowski emphasized that the candidates with the clearest platform and a great track record of working with their classmates will likely be most successful. “Helping people in my district communities is one of the best parts of my job, and introducing young people to public service is an important part of that. I appreciated the insightful questions and comments from McAlister’s students expressed during the combined in-person and online time I spent with them. I look forward to hearing from these bright young students in the future,” said Zawistowski.
