Zawistowski Tours Suffield High School Agriscience Program

SUFFIELD — State Rep. Tami Zawistowski on Monday got a first-hand look at the Agriscience Center at Suffield High School, which offers a rigorous program of studies that includes coursework providing students with tangible insight and experience into a career field that’s playing a greater role in Connecticut’s economic landscape. Laura LaFlamme, the program’s director, showed Zawistowski the program’s greenhouse and its aquatics center as well as the large and small animal facilities. More than 100 students are enrolled in the program, some of them coming from communities such as Avon, Simsbury, East Granby, Enfield, Bloomfield and Windsor Locks. As Zawistowski toured the facility, students shaved and shaped wood that would be used in the construction of wooden reindeer that will be sold at their annual holiday decorations sale. The high school’s Agriscience program has room for 220 students. “Hands-on education is a valuable and too-often underestimated part of the learning process,” said Zawistowski, who represents residents of this town as well as East Granby and part of Windsor. “I’m thrilled that Suffield is among the places young people go to immerse themselves in an area of study that interests them—this program should be a source of pride for this community.”
