HARTFORD — State Rep. Tami Zawistowski wants the legislature to extend by a year the period of time the state will award grants to school districts that have made security upgrades at their buildings.
The legislature in 2013 set standards for school safety and pledged to provide reimbursements to districts that took on security-related projects that met those requirements. The deadline to finish that work is June 30. Some districts, however, haven’t finished their projects and there’s no mechanism that allows districts to apply for an extension—a predicament faced by school district administrators in Suffield.
Zawistowski, who represents Suffield, attended Thursday’s meeting of the Public Safety and Security Committee to testify on her proposal (S.B. 236) to extend the application deadline to June 30, 2017.
“Varying factors, such as difficulty performing work while school is in session, has left some school districts needing extra time to finish this very important work the state has encouraged,” said Zawistowski, who serves the 61st House District that also includes East Granby and part of Windsor.
Public Safety Committee members will now deliberate on Zawistowski’s proposal.
