Zawistowski, Kissel Applaud Grant Money for Hilltop Farm

Sen. John A. Kissel and Rep. Tami Zawistowski today applauded the state’s approval of $250,000 to restore a structure at Hilltop Farm in Suffield.
Sen. Kissel touted the Small Towns Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) allocation as a “strong investment” in Suffield’s agricultural heritage.
“Hilltop Farm is a true gem in north-central Connecticut,” Sen. Kissel said. “The farm is a great educational and agricultural asset that can boost tourism here in north-central Connecticut. The state recognizes the value of Hilltop Farm, and this funding is very much appreciated.”
The National Park Service recognized the farm’s historic significance by listing it in the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. With almost 2500 feet of Connecticut River frontage; 65 acres of woodlands, grasslands, wetlands, cropland, and grazing land; nesting American bald eagles; 10 buildings and thousands of feet of fencing, the farm requires much oversight and maintenance.
“Agriculture, from traditional farms to the blossoming retail marketplace, is an important part of Connecticut’s economy,” said Zawistowski, who represents Suffield, East Granby and part of Windsor. “This grant is a recognition of that fact as well as a signal of the growing value of agricultural-related tourism. This great investment in Hilltop Farm will have a measurable and lasting impact on our region.”
The STEAP funding, directed through the State Bond Commission, is overseen by the Office of Policy and Management and funds economic development, community conservation and quality of life projects for localities that are ineligible to receive Urban Action bonds.
