HARTFORD – Connecticut’s Fifth graders participate in the state’s Kid Governor program, a unique civics project designed to increase interest and engagement of government. The statewide project consists of mock campaign, election, and inauguration processes. Windsor’s Makhi Ettienne-Modeste was inaugurated as Connecticut’s Kid Governor for 2022.

The inauguration program included remarks from state officials and remarks from outgoing Kid Governor Reese Naughton, followed by a video conferenced panel discussion on “Meeting the Three Branches of Government”. State Representative Tami Zawistowski, Supreme Court Justice Dennis Eveleigh, and Attorney General William Tong fielded questions from Fifth grade students throughout the state concerning the roles and responsibilities of the Legislative, Judicial and Executive branches of state government.

“The Kid Governor program is an innovative way to introduce students to their government.  Civic engagement is critical to the protection and enhancement of our cherished democratic way of life, so its enriching to see this project translate to an important life lesson that these students will continue to carry with them,” said Rep. Zawistowski. “I commend Makhi for his hard work and dedication to his campaign platform, an important subject that resonated with many of his fellow students. I look forward to working with him as he completes his 2022 term.”

Each candidate for Kid Governor runs on a one-issue platform. Makhi explained in his inauguration address that his campaign’s platform goal will be to prevent animal cruelty. He plans to work with state leaders to educate fellow students on tips to recognize potential abuse and identify what resources there are available to those who are seeking help for an animal. In addition to his platform for Kid Governor, Makhi is a well-rounded student at the John F. Kennedy School. He plays basketball, football, and soccer, and enjoys spending time with his two dogs, friends, and family.
