North Central Legislators Tour Thrall Family Malt Farm
WINDSOR – State Representatives Bill Simanski (R-62), Christopher Davis (R-57) and Tami Zawistowski (R-61) toured the Thrall Family Malt House with Spencer and Sarah Thrall on Thursday, June 13th.
Malt is produced by germinating grains by soaking them in water and then drying them with hot air to stop further germination. The malted grain is used in a variety of products from beer and whiskey to baked goods and malt vinegar.
Rep. Simanski commented, “It was exciting to see the whole process from the harvested grain to the final product. I was impressed with the variety that they can produce to meet the different needs to craft breweries.”
The Malt House occupies a former tobacco warehouse at the corner of Kennedy Road and River Street in Windsor. Spencer Thrall explained that their farm land had been classified by the Department of Agriculture as among the best in the state and perfectly suited for growing grains.
“I was impressed to learn more about their long family history of farming in the region,” said Rep. Zawistowski. “I’m excited that they are continuing to innovate and grow a new product to meet demand.”
The malt house began operations in 2017 is the only one in the state to grow its own grains.
