Libraries have evolved quite significantly from the traditional card catalogs, microfiche, cold and quiet places they were for many of us growing up. Today, these spaces have been transformed into vibrant community gathering spaces for people of all ages.
Yesterday, I had a chance to tour the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library and see the evolution that has taken place firsthand. Recognizing the importance of promoting reading at an early age, the library pairs with the Clerk’s Office to offer a “Books for Babies” program which provides books to families with newborn children. In addition to the standard reading programs for children and adults, they also offer a puzzle exchange, a vegetable, flower, and herb seed borrowing program, and the opportunity to borrow items like a movie projector, metal detector, various lawn games, an automotive code reader, or a unique cake pan for a birthday party. They really do have it all!
Special thanks to Carrie Tyszka, Library Director, for showing me around and the other staff members who took a few minutes out of their day to teach me something new about the types of amazing our library offers.
September is Library Card Sign-up card month, so if you haven’t already head over to the library and get your card!
