Rep. Veach Kicks Off New Session, Highlights Legislative Priorities

HARTFORD – On Wednesday, State Representative Donna Veach (R-Berlin) joined her fellow Republican and Democrat colleagues on the floor of the house, officially kicking off the 2022 legislative session.

One of Rep. Veach’s top priorities for this legislative session is to improve public safety.

“For almost a year, my Republican colleagues and I have done everything within our legislative powers to sit down at the table with our counterparts and try and address this issue,” Rep. Veach said. “Unfortunately, our requests have largely gone ignored despite the crimes happening with greater frequency. Anyone who opens up a newspaper or turns on the television is bound to come across a story where someone’s car was stolen, a homeowner was shot at, or most recently where a victim was dragged attempting to stop a car theft in process.”

Additionally, Rep. Veach would like to readdress the police accountability bill to restore their qualified immunity, ability to request a consent search during a motor vehicle stop when reasonable suspicion exists, and protections to officers who receive a mental health assessment, so they are able to seek treatment without fear of discipline, or of losing their jobs.

“Year after year Connecticut continues to be one of the most expensive states to live in,” Rep. Veach said. “The financial burden this state continues to put onto our residents is unbearable for so many and we have a plan to put more money back into their pockets by increasing tax credits and repealing those on trucks that deliver goods.”

In the second year of a two-year legislative cycle, the main goal of the legislature is to make any necessary adjustments to the budget adopted in the previous year. Any new laws or adjustments to previously passed laws must be budgetary related. All bills brought forth in the shorter session must come through the committee that has oversight into the issue being presented.
