Rep. Veach Submits Testimony to Provide Funding to Help Support Shipping Costs Associated with Military Care Packages

This bill is an important proposal for Connecticut veterans to access the essential basic items that are needed when they are serving overseas. Many nonprofits that try to help our veterans do not realize the shipping costs for humanitarian aid. This became evident as many people tried to do good deeds by hosting collection drives for the people of Ukraine, only to be shocked that there is a huge cost to send “aid packages” overseas. I have spoken to several churches and other organizations that have reached out to me asking how they can ship their boxes. Many organizations likely ended up not sending items because of the astronomical costs. Our government should consider assisting with the cost of shipping for humanitarian purposes and to help our Military families. These packages do more than just care for the basic needs of our military, they help to boost moral and let them know they are cared for and that their efforts to protect and serve all of us back at home are appreciated.

I urge the Veterans’ Affairs Committee to pass HB-6003 to allow veterans to receive care packages of humanitarian aid and to pass legislation that recognizes and respects the sacrifices made by the military veterans of our state. Thank you for your consideration.

Libraries have evolved quite significantly from the traditional card catalogs, microfiche, cold and quiet places they were for many of us growing up. Today, these spaces have been transformed into vibrant community gathering spaces for people of all ages. Yesterday, I had a chance to tour the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library and see the evolution that […]
