HARTFORD – A House Republican initiative co-sponsored by State Representative Donna Veach (R-30) to provide immediate services to victims of domestic violence has received a favorable report from members Human Services Committee.

The bill, HB-6520, An Act Concerning the Provision of Temporary State Services to Victims of Domestic Violence, would accelerate essential services to victims of domestic violence by providing an immediate 90 days of temporary relief benefits for programs like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP), Temporary Family Assistance (TFA), and Care-4-Kids. It would also waive income requirements during the initial 90 days in order to ensure residents would be eligible to receive these services during a time of crisis.

“Being able to provide victims of domestic violence with basic necessities such as food, shelter, and other essential resources expeditiously will go a long way in helping them, and in many instances their children, break free from situations where their abusers have them trapped financially,” Rep. Veach said.

The bill’s favorable report from the Human Services Committee increases its chance to advance to the floor of the House where it may be called for a vote.
