Scott Delivers Remarks at Inauguration Ceremony for Connecticut’s 2023 Kid Governor

Hartford–Elisavet “Ellie” Mendez, a 5th grader at Monroe Elementary School, has been sworn into office as Connecticut’s 2023 Kid Governor.  Ellie began her term with a formal inauguration ceremony and education program.  She took the oath of office, administered by Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas, on January 20, 2023, and delivered an Inaugural Address.

The civics initiative was created by the Connecticut Democracy Center. It’s a program in residence at Connecticut’s Old State House, where the Kid Governor has an office.  5th grade classes across Connecticut elected the Kid Governor during the week of November 7-15, 2022.

State Representative Tony Scott (R-112) was among the Connecticut officials to deliver remarks at the ceremony.

“I congratulate Ellie and look forward to her representing Monroe as much as I do. My daughter, Addison, was on the cabinet for Kid Governor three years ago. I wouldn’t be here today, as a State Representative, if it wasn’t for the Kid Governor’s Office. Because Addison ran for the position, it gave me the inspiration that I could do more to help my town, my district, and the state of Connecticut,” said Scott.

The celebration included an educational program featuring elected officials from the three branches of state government.

Ellie ran on a platform of addressing anxiety and depression, focusing on three points. She is looking to provide strategies to reduce stress and anxiety, come up with ways for kids to communicate their feelings with a trusted adult, and create an online resource with positive and uplifting messages to inspire kids.
