Trumbull Lawmakers Host Successful Post-Session Wrap-up
Focusing on Crime, Drug Abuse and Affordability
TRUMBULL- State Reps. David Rutigliano (R-123), Laura Devlin (R-134) and Ben McGorty (R-122) hosted a Post- Session Town Hall with Trumbull residents on Monday June 13th to discuss the now concluded 2022 legislative session and many of the new pieces of legislation signed into by Governor Lamont.
The Trumbull lawmakers spoke to almost twenty residents on state issues in the Trumbull Town Council Chambers.
Some of the topics of discussion included: Criminal justice reform and juvenile crime; the drug crisis and the rise in opioid deaths since the pandemic and the state’s legalization of Marijuana and sale of the product.
One of the major topics raised was inflation and the affordability to live in Connecticut. The legislators mentioned how during the 2022 legislative session, legislative Republicans proposed a $1.2 billion tax relief plan that would have provided immediate, significant, and long-term tax relief to Connecticut’s working- and middle-class families facing historic inflation.
Rep. Rutigliano said, “I want to thank everyone who came out on a beautiful Monday night. I hear daily from residents how the high cost of food, fuel and clothing is crushing Trumbull families. We have a real plan to provide some economic relief and I call on my colleagues to convene a special session and pass the relief today.”
“Contrary to what has been billed by some as “great economic news”, the Democrat budget proposal that passed was a missed opportunity to provide residents of Connecticut with much more significant and lasting tax relief,” said Rep. Devlin.
“It’s always great to hear from constituents in these session wrap-up events, and many of them are echoing concerns that we have heard, time and time again: Connecticut is unaffordable they are struggling to keep up with inflation,” Rep. McGorty said. “Republicans will maintain our push for a more affordable Connecticut and keep up the fight to deliver meaningful financial relief to you and your families.”
The Trumbull delegation mentioned how the majority party voted against historic tax relief package during the regular legislative session, instead opting for only short-term rebates for a select few.
Last week, House and Senate Republicans called for a special session to adopt nearly $750 million in additional relief for Connecticut residents, including tax cuts and energy assistance to ease the burden on working- and middle- class residents.
