Rep. Rutigliano Votes to Extend Telehealth Service for Two More Years
HARTFORD- State Rep. David Rutigliano (R-123) supported legislation this week which allows for expanded access to telehealth services to continue in Connecticut for two more years.
When the pandemic began, the governor used his emergency powers last spring due to Covid to allow for expanded telehealth services, and at that time, Rep. Rutigliano and others hailed the decision.
Since then, Rutigliano, along with his legislative colleagues have extended telehealth services twice. This latest proposal passed by the House of Representatives extends the availability of telehealth services, until June 30, 2023. This includes the requirement that health insurance policies maintain coverage for services provided via telehealth to the same extent services are covered when provided in-person.
“The increased availability of Telehealth services has been a god-send for patients during Covid. It has led to increased patient access, improved quality of care, and a more satisfied patient experiences” said Rep. Rutigliano. “The two-year extension gives patients and providers some certainty while the legislature and stakeholders work on a permanent solution in making telehealth a viable option for medical care.”
Telehealth services are those that enable healthcare providers to interact with patients, including those with Medicaid coverage, without needing to meet in person by using electronic methods, such as video conferencing and telephones.
The bill insures reimbursement levels for services provided via telehealth, and those and in person visits are comparable.
The vote in the House of Representatives was unanimous and the bill now moves to the Senate for further action. The legislative session ends at midnight June 9th.
