Rep. Rutigliano Participates in American Legion Boys’ State Program

WEST HAVEN – State Representative David Rutigliano (R-Trumbull) participated in bill writing workshops at the American Legion’s Boys’ State program held at the University of New Haven on June 26. Through this annual program, exceptional high school juniors from all over the state gather to learn about policy creation and implementation.

At the beginning of the evening, Rep. Rutigliano addressed the participants with other legislative colleagues about the bill writing process and how bills become law. Students asked questions about how legislators interacted with one another and why certain bills failed.

Rep. Rutigliano assisted students as they crafted bills. Divided by municipality and legislative committee, he visited each classroom and helped brainstorm topics for bill proposals. He also reviewed ideas they already had and discussed their feasibility.

“What a great program. Being able to talk with these outstanding kids and provide some real hands-on experience, answering the students’ questions and helping them learn about state government is a valuable opportunity,” Rep. Rutigliano said. “This was an insightful group that had some great ideas, and I know that as they continue with their educations, they will be incredibly successful. I would like to thank the American Legion and all of the volunteers for organizing this event year after year.”

Starting in 1937, the American Legion began sponsoring an annual, week-long gathering of both male and female high school juniors with the intent of introducing them to what could rightfully be labeled a crash course on American Civics.
