Rep. David Rutigliano: Trumbull Memorial Day Service

Memorial Day arrives this weekend, and it is a time to reflect on the service of those who answered our nation’s call in times of armed conflict, and made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure future generations of Americans would remain free.
Originally known as Decoration Day, it was a time when Americans decorated the grave sites of soldiers who had given their lives in the Civil War. On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, a leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. The purpose of this remembrance was to decorate the graves of those who had died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day and it wasn’t until 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May, the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day as a federal holiday.
On this day of remembrance, please take a moment to reflect on the lives of those men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in serving this great country of ours. I encourage you to stop a veteran or an active-duty service member and thank them for protecting the freedoms we enjoy so much.
