National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription medications. During the last decade, Americans have turned in more than 4.1 million pounds—more than 2,100 tons of pills. 6.8 million Americans have abused prescription drugs in recent years and the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses has risen. More than 54 percent of people who abuse prescription drugs got received them through friends or relatives; a statistic that includes thefts from family medicine cabinets.
Traditional methods for disposing of prescriptions—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
