Hartford – On Wednesday the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) released its 2024 voter record scores for the Connecticut State House and Senate. Its scores were based on action taken on several priority pieces of legislation that had been flagged by the organization because of their expected impact on various business sectors. According to CBIA’s legislative record report, State Rep. Karen Reddington-Hughes (R-Woodbury) completed the 2024 session with a perfect score, signaling her support and advocacy efforts in favor of the state’s business community.

“As a small business owner, I know first-hand about the trials and tribulations it takes to run a shop in Connecticut. To strengthen our economy, it’s critical that the state legislature promote an environment that attracts the job creators our state deserves. I was proud to support legislation that will ensure resources are available to working families and to entice entrepreneurs to consider making Connecticut their place of business,” said Reddington-Hughes.

Reddington-Hughes also stood strongly against newly proposed mandates this session. The starkest example was the expansion of mandated paid sick leave, which was approved by the majority on a party-line vote. The policy radically shifts the current sick leave standards, which removes standards like employee notice, and will impact all businesses – regardless of number of employees – by 2027.

“While I am proud to have earned a perfect score in support of our business community, much more should be done. The majority party’s failure to adjust the current budget is case-in-point that the decision-making on the state’s finances must be taken more seriously. The one-time spending package, which drew on American Rescue Plan Act dollars, did not make structural changes that the state budget needed. With no more dollars to draw from, funding will need to come from elsewhere to sustain several state services and programs. Businesses and residents alike deserve a legislature that will craft a balanced budget that does not continue to squeeze them for additional revenue,” said Reddington-Hughes.
